I look forward to trying Origami King, and if its okay, or great, or so so, I'll still most likely try the older games if convenient enough for me to get them. But if I loved a series, and I loved it for its system, and it got changed too much, it'd put me off. Personally, I never experienced a franchise where its core mechanics got changed too much, perhaps just the story and direction of the game. Final Fantasy games have been the target of scrutiny before for their changes. But I felt the lack of actual dungeons really took away from some of the Zelda spirit. However, Mario always manages to defeat him at some point. ![]() Is it a huge, detrimental, overhaul from its predecessors? Not necessarily, although going open world certainly was a huge change in a different direction. People dont need to be huge Mario fans to know that Bowser is almost always the main villain. Its up to Mario to take down the origami kings minions and restore peace to the Mushroom Kingdom. I'm not here to rant about an unrelated game, but that is a fair comparison. The evil King Olly has turned Princess Peach into origami and plans to take over the land. However, there are quite a few who dislike that weapons now break, master sword/shield arent what they used to be and feel kinda meaningless now, and of course the most important aspect.dungeons. This is a controversial take here, but I find Breath of the Wild to somewhat fit into this category. It may be a fun Mario game, but its not what Paper Mario really represents in his/her opinion. But what is bad, and more along the lines of what Hypo is saying, is when a game deviates from where it started. The fanbase is pretty divided on it, one half calls GameFreak lazy and are up in arms, some are loving the new ideas. Same game, different gimmick each generation now. ![]() So as an outsider, what I believe u/hypo_flaneur is saying is that its not bad that the games are different, its because the change is too much. ![]() It'll arrive tomorrow hopefully, and I can try it out. And was reading in here because I had the same question as OP, although I already did order it. I'm new to this sub and new to paper mario.
